World Wide Web, aka The Internet, has completed 30 years of its unbelievable existence and growth. 2018 and 2019 are the years where a lot of significant technological advancements in the world have taken place. Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, Quantum Computing, Augmented Reality (AR) and Visual Reality (VR) etc. have become the new trends. Humanoid Robots have also come into existence – the kind of robots which can replace human beings in a literal sense.
With all these advancements in the technology, one thing which has seen the enormous transformation is the World Wide Web. There was a time when people were not aware of the Internet and its use. However, the present scenario is different. There’s almost nothing which cannot be done on the Internet. Starting from financial transactions to making friends to shopping, to sightseeing – it includes almost everything! But, things back then were not this interesting.
World Wide Web – The History
On March 12, 1989, Tim put forth his proposal of the World Wide Web, which had a very simple interface in contrast with the Web that you use today. The first-ever website to go live on the platform created by Tim was a very simple one with plain text and no images or irritating ads popping up. Click here to visit the website.
Before the World Wide Web, connecting people who live far away was a challenging task. Socialising was only possible if one stepped out of their houses and went in between the people. But the introduction of the World Wide Web has changed the entire picture in a short time. The Internet has made it possible for people across continents to communicate with their people and socialize with ease. Other than communication, the World Wide Web has facilitated a lot of things for the people such as shopping, education, entertainment and much more.
The motive of the actual proposal by Berners-Lee’s was to provide a linked information system for the people to carry out the exchange of data remotely. Soon, the Internet evolved and allowed companies and then individuals to create a website of their own and send out their thoughts, opinions and cat pictures to the people around the world. In 1993, there were around 600 websites on the Internet, which have now increased to over 1.2 billion websites, out of which about 200 million are highly active. However, not all of these 200 million websites are worth visiting, as it even includes explicit content and other unimportant stuff.
World Wide Web – The Present
Everything is possible today in the blink of an eye, by being in the comfort of your house. Right from TV to Refrigerator to even mobile phones or cameras, every single gadget is growing smarter day by day. All of them make use of the Internet, thus making the user experience better. It provides entertainment and serves a lot more purposes than they were supposed to. Moreover, Internat has also benefitted businesses to a greater extent. No matter how big or small, it has helped them in showcasing their products in front of the global audience at a cost which is way lower than the costs incurred in the physical market.
However, the other side of this is dark; it is negative. The Dark Web is a part of the Internet, which is not usually listed or found from the search engines. However, accessing the Dark Web is completely illegal and not at all advised. This is because of all the illicit activities which are generally carried out in the Dark Web. About 90% of the World Wide Web falls under Dark Web, and the Internet that we use daily is just 10% of the Internet. This would be enough to give you an idea of how vast the Internet is.
Thus, the Internet is one of the best things which has ever happened to humankind as it has facilitated in simplifying a lot of day to day tasks. If used in the right way, the Internet has the power to bring about more tremendous positive transformations in the world.
